Artist's Statement

Painting is visual music for me; it is a dance. It is riding the tempo of the moment with brush, palette knife - even fingers - recording the journey. It is a rhythmic flow that feels seductive, dangerous, and vivifying.

Although I paint a number of subjects, one of my favorites is Flamenco. I love the flashing lights, the intensity of the music, the ardor and bravery of the artists, and the sensual nature of the dance. It is juicy, and it complements my interests in catching the colors and motion of a moment, whether in representative or non-representative pictures. The historical context is also appealing; a group of widely diverse cultures banded together to create this art and philosophy of life. In our society I long for outlets for this sort of positive expression – a combination of beauty, courageous assertion, and community sharing.

“Leaving a mark on this world is an aggressive act; standing firm as an individual, man or woman, is an expression of Mars’ virility; and letting our spirit and soul creatively loose upon life is an act of reverence to the spirit that makes life vital.” - Thomas Moore
